Jorge Munoz - Inspirational & Motivational Stories

Jorge Munoz - cooks meals for homeless people

As an immigrant, Jorge Munoz could identify well with those who had nothing at the beginning of their journey in the United States. Born in Columbia, Munoz lost his father at an early age. His mother had a difficult time raising him and his sister so she migrated to Brooklyn, New York to work as a nanny. Munoz followed suit as his mother believed it was a better future for them all and in 1987 he obtained legal residency.

For the past 6 years, Munoz has willingly spent time and fed unemployed men under the elevated 7 train in Jackson Heights, Queens. His non profit, An Angel in Queens, which was born in the summer of 2004, delivers free home-cooked meals to the unemployed in Queens. Many of these men are homeless while a few have lost their jobs. "When I see these guys on the street," Munoz said last year, "it's like seeing me 20-something years ago when I came to this country." A school bus driver by day, news of his mobile soup kitchen van has spread and people from all backgrounds have joined in. They call him the Angel of Queens. Besides feeding a largely Hispanic audience, Munoz feeds Egyptians, Chinese, Ethiopians, South Asians, white and black Americans and a Britisher. "I'll help anyone who needs to eat. Just line up, "Munoz says. For many of these men, Munoz's hot meal is probably the first meal that they have had from the night before. Every night he arrives at 9:30 at 74th Street with free hot food, coffee and hot chocolate. They accept containers of chicken and rice happily and finish it within minutes. What is even more amazing is the fact that Munoz has been feeding hungry mouths religiously for over 4 years now and according to him; he has served over 70,000 meals. "Jorge Munoz recognizes that we all have a stake in one another," the White House said. "By giving his time, energy and resources to feeding the hungry, he has demonstrated the enduring American values of sacrifice and kindness."
